“Merry Christmas, Annabelle,” my mom chirped as she placed a tray with pancakes and orange juice on the bed beside me.
“Mom?” I squinted through bleary eyes at my mom’s Joker-like grin. “Wh-what’s going on? What time is it?”
“It’s Christmas morning, four o’clock to be exact.”
This was insane. What was she doing up at four in the morning and cooking me breakfast, no less? Until that very second, I hadn’t been sure she was even aware it was Christmas. There were no decorations except for the oversized wreath hanging on the front door. My dad hadn’t been home long enough to buy a tree, and the house had been devoid of any cheer. “Mom, how long have you been up?”
“Oh, I couldn’t sleep. The new medication Dr. Morris gave me makes me happy and ready to start the day.” She bounced up and down on my bed, making the tray resemble a ship on a rough sea. The juice splashed over the sides of the glass, and I just managed to catch it before the glass itself fell onto the pancakes.
So she’d gone from a Xanax zombie haze to being high as a kite. Great, just great.
“Well, Mom. Why don’t you give me a minute to wake up, and then I’ll come down and eat breakfast with you.”
She sprung up from the bed. “Whatever you wish, I’ll take this back down.” She was gone just as quickly as she’d arrived. I shook my head. It was great she was feeling better, even if it was medically induced, but this new version of my mom would take some getting used to.
Shrugging on my robe, I followed her downstairs ten minutes later. It would be good to have her happy again. The accident had taken its toll on her and … “Holy crap!” I exclaimed, my mouth hanging open. The entire living room was covered in tinsel and lights that shined so bright they were blinding. Every decoration I could remember from the eighteen years of my life had been unpacked and positioned. Fairies, elves, and Santas that sang Christmas tunes and danced were placed on every available surface.
“Mom! What the …?”
“Do you like it? I was up all night decorating, and I still couldn’t fit it all out.” She pointed at the stack of boxes in the corner of the living room. “There’s nowhere to put the rest of the decorations. Maybe we can put them upstairs?”
“Mom, I think this is enough, don’t you?” We’d gone way past festive and into scaryland. Looking closely into her eyes, I could see she was wired. “Why don’t you rest? You’ve been really busy, and it looks … unbelievable. I’ll make you some tea. How does soothing chamomile sound?” Steering her toward the sofa, I pushed two giant Christmas bears to one side and made space for her to sit. “I’ll be right back with that tea.”
She sipped her tea, all the while listing the chores she wanted to do around the house now that she had the motivation to do them.
